Dr. Tuo Chen is a Early-career Principal Investigator in the School of Resources and Safety Engineering at Chongqing University, China, and a selectee of the Chinese National Overseas High-Level Young Talent Program. He earned his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from McGill University, Canada, and accumulated several years of Canadian industrial experience at Vale and Alamos Gold, where he led geomechanical analysis, ground control optimization and full Life-of-Mine planning for large-scale underground mining operations. His research spans four core domains: safe and sustainable mining practices, mine design and ground control, rockburst hazard simulation and mitigation, and energy extraction and storage in mine spaces. He is particularly recognized for developing explosive-free rock fracturing technologies using soundless chemical demolition agents, integrating laboratory testing, numerical modeling and in-situ field validation. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals in the field of rock mechanics and mining engineering. His research findings have been adopted and practically deployed in several mining operations across multiple countries. His work has been recognized with multiple prestigious academic awards and research fellowships. As PI of multiple national key research initiatives, he drives forward the safe, efficient and low-carbon transition of the mining sector.
