The 6th International Symposium on Mine Safety Science and Engineering (ISMSSE2023) was held in Harbin, China on 18-20 August 2023. Honorary Chairs are Academician Shining Zhou, Academician Liang Yuan, Academician Meifeng Cai, Academician Shirong Ge, Academician Laibin Zhang, Prof. Xueqiu He. The general chair of this symposium is Prof. Shangjiu Meng. International Chair is Prof. Hani Mitri. The organizing committee chair of this symposium is Prof. Guohua Zhang. The technical program committee chair of this symposium is Prof. Qiang Wu. The technical program committee international chairs of this symposium are Prof. Ting Ren, Prof. Shimin Liu.

The motif of the symposium focusing on the theory of mine safety science, mine ventilation, fire, water damage prevention, mine dynamic disaster, deep mine safety, slope disaster prevention, coal mine gas control and utilization, mine electromechanical safety, mine occupational hazards, safe development of oil, gas and hydrate, mine safety management and safety behavior, mine safety internet of things, smart mine safety and visualization, mine emergency management and rescue and other related topics. The Symposium showed cutting-edge results and successful experiences from mine safety science theory research to practical application.


The symposium was hosted by Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology, and co-hosted by University of Science and Technology Beijing, McGill University, China University of Mining and Technology, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Central Mining Institute, Central South University, University of Wollongong, Chongqing University, Northeastern University, University of New South Wales, Taiyuan University of Technology, Guizhou University, Fuzhou University, Anhui University of Science and Technology, Shandong University of Science and Technology, Liaoning Technical University, Khabarovsk Federal Research Center, Xi`an University of Science and Technology, Hunan University of Science and Technology, North China University of Science and Technology, Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology, Hebei University of Engineering, Henan Polytechnic University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, North China Institute of Science and Technology, Xinjiang Institute of Engineering, Anyang Institute of Technology, Heilongjiang Province Hydraulic Research Institute, and supported by China National Coal Association, China Occupational Safety and Health Association, China Coal Society, China Institute of Safety in Mines, Zhong-an Academy of Safety Engineering, AnBiao National Center for Mining Products Safety Sign, China Coal Research Institute Co., Ltd., Heilongjiang Longmay Mining Group Co. Ltd, Xi'an Research Institute of China Coal Technology and Engineering Group, et al. More than 400 experts and scholars from nine countries, including China, Australia, Russia, U.S., Canada, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Ethiopia, attended the symposium and carried out academic exchanges on new theories, technologies, equipment, and methods in mine safety science and engineering and related fields.


At the opening ceremony, Prof. Shangjiu Meng from Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology, the general chair of this symposium, gave a welcome speech. Prof. Hani Mitri from McGill University, the International Chair of the International Committee on Mine Safety Science and Engineering, gave a welcome speech. Prof. Xueqiu He from USTB, the Chair of the International Committee on Mine Safety Science and Engineering, gave a welcome speech and announced the award list of Outstanding Young Scholars in international mining safety, the ICMSSE has decided to hold the conference once a year instead of biennial, providing an international academic exchange platform focusing on the innovative development of global mine safety science and engineering. Prof. Shimin Liu from The Pennsylvania State University, announced the 7th ISMSSE will be hosted by The Pennsylvania State University, with Professor Shimin Liu as the conference Chair.

Prof. Ismet Canbulat from The University of New South Wales, Australia, Prof. Aixiang Wu from University of Science and Technology Beijing, China, Prof. Igor Rasskazov from Mining Institute Far Eastern Branch Russian Academy of Science, Russia, Prof. Weiguo Liang from Taiyuan Normal University, China, Prof. Shimin Liu from The Pennsylvania State University, USA, Prof. Jiachen Wang from China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), China, Prof. Ting Ren from University of Wollongong, Australia, Prof. Jun Deng from Xi'an University of Science and Technology, Chian, Prof. Fidelis Suorineni from Nazarbaev University, Kazakhstan, Prof. Baiquan Lin from China University of Mining and Technology, China, Prof. Hani Mitri (instead by Dr. Yizhuo Li), International Chair of the International Committee on Mine Safety Science and Engineering from McGill University, Canada, Prof. Baoyong Zhang from Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology, China, were invited to give an academic report.

The symposium lasted three days, with one main venue and three sub-venues on theory of mine safety science, mine safety mining technology and mine intelligent safety. Prof. Aixiang Wu, Prof. Zegong Liu, Prof. Jun Deng, Prof. Liwen Guo, Prof. Guoxun Jing, Prof. Shugang Li, Prof. Baiquan Lin, Prof. Jianping Wei, Prof. Yueping Qin, Prof. Linming Dou, Prof. Baisheng Nie, Prof. Xihua Zhou, Prof. Longzhe Jin, Prof. Enyuan Wang, Prof. Kaili Xu, Prof. Shangxian Yin, Prof. Weidong Lu, Prof. Cunbao Deng, Prof. Fusheng Wang, Prof. Shuqing Li, Prof. Ming Yang, Prof. Haifei Lin, Prof. Baoyong Zhang, Prof. Ke Gao, Prof. Rongkun Pan, Prof. Lianhua Cheng, Prof. Feng Xu, Prof. Dazhao Song, Prof. Peng Xiao, Prof. Xiaofei Liu, Prof. Gang Zhou, Prof. Xiangjun Chen, Prof. Jinzhang Jia, Prof. Guoqing Niu served as sub-venue chair, respectively. A total of 11 main venue presentations, 107 sub-venues presentations and 27 academic posters were displayed. On the basis of this conference, the ICMSSE selected 14 Outstanding Young Scholars in international mining safety and 52 excellent conference papers.

The symposium serves as a bridge for global mine players to exchange mine safety science theory, technology and engineering practice, and enhance the interactions among the government, enterprises and academic circle. Highly acknowledge for the support from everyone.
